The new STUDACT article “A scoping review of research on school-age youth activism in global citizenship education” is available at the PROSPECTS journal. The study, authored by Dr. Carla Inguaggiato, Dr. Miri Yemini, and Dr. Tatiana Khavenson, examines school-age youth activism within global citizenship education (GCE) frameworks, analyzing 43 research articles published between 2012 and 2023. This extensive review provides crucial insights into how educational institutions worldwide are approaching youth activism as part of their global citizenship curricula.
The research reveals important patterns and gaps in current GCE programming, particularly highlighting that most activism-focused programs are resource-intensive and predominantly implemented in affluent schools in the Global North. The study found that while these programs effectively engage students in critical issues like climate change and human rights through social sciences curricula, they often lack the epistemological depth necessary for meaningful Global North-South cooperation. The authors call for expanded research and the development of more nuanced programs that address youth activism across diverse contexts and educational settings, pointing toward the need for more inclusive and globally representative approaches to citizenship education.
